Mission Statement
Our mission is to lead a global shift empowering preventative rather than reactive healthcare. We’re starting with livestock. In the future we’ll expand to humans.
We’re developing minimally invasive implantable biosensors that provide continuous health monitoring for farmers and detect animal health issues or important alerts as early as possible. The devices will provide near real-time health data while sitting protected just below the skin through injection-based insertion. AI-driven interpretation software will derive actionable insights on disease and heat detection, alerting farmers to potential issues before visual indicators appear.
Current methods of monitoring livestock health are outdated. This is harmful – livestock health issues cause $360 billion in annual global production losses, with 40% of deaths coming from preventable or unknown causes. Most farms aren’t tech enabled. 70-90% monitor the health of their animals via manual inspection. This process is time consuming and subjective. Countless farms we’ve called have told stories of them needing to drive around for hours daily to check up on cows/search for those that didn’t come back to the barn. Some farms use external tags to monitor animal health, but these collect limited data and thus minimal actionable insights; they aren’t much of a step up from just checking manually. We want to change this paradigm. Our products will provide 24/7 health surveillance without disrupting animal behavior or requiring constant maintenance which reduces stress on animals, decreases time expense and labor costs for farmers, and helps save $$$ from early or widespread animal death.
The current system of global healthcare, for humans and animals, is reactionary rather than preventative. It relies on addressing issues as they arise rather than being proactive about stopping them from manifesting. This is one of the epiphanies we had that led us to the idea for Nexa. We first took it from an agricultural standpoint – we’ve personally had family farms destroyed by disease. From a human angle, we realized a lot of the healthcare systems we have in place are to respond to illnesses after they appear rather than preventing them from developing in the first place. Friends of ours have received cancer diagnoses, only to be told “this could have been prevented, if only…”Why should we need to wait until something goes wrong? If it could have been prevented, we want to make sure it is.
